The Love Math Challenge - turning the pain from learning math into joy
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.10 месяцев назад
Everyone has a math story. Many people hold painful or dreadful memories from their math learning days. This comes from a variety of reasons, including situations at home, with school or teachers, and even socio-culturally. As a consequence, people carry around feelings of shame or inadequacy throughout their lives. And yet, in our society, we don't really deal specifically with the pain that c...
Dad surprises daughters' preschool with story time rap!
Просмотров 4,8 тыс.Год назад
My daughters' preschool invites family members to read stories to the children. On this particular day, inspired by musical artists on LA-based "The Cruz Show" radio program, I came in with a musical surprise. Following a reading of Anna Dewdney's "Llama Llama Gram and Grandpa", I kicked on a beat and delivered the same book once again... but this time, in hip-hop fashion. At the end, I also fe...

Straight up, I love CostCo. As I shopped around there for the umpteenth time, it occurred to me that the environment is bursting with opportunities for fun and engaging math learning. I thought, "it would be so cool to just walk around here with kids and think of interesting math problems to figure out!" So you know me, I pitched the idea to my daughters and their good friend Eloise, to which t...

How is the square root of √8.=2√2
2:50 I can only think of that when she speaks: 🤓👆
I can’t imagine how many times they rehearsed this to make even somewhat presentable for the others I don’t believe that all of this was improvised THIS IS GOLD😂😂😂😂
I was at University in the days of Overhead Projectors. The Maths Professor came into the auditorium, turned on the OHP and placed an equation on the screen, saying, "solve this while I get my stuff ready". I was dumbstruck, I had no clue how to even begin solving it but then I realised every other student had that "rabbit caught in the headlights" look. Nobody had a clue what to do. Eventually the professor asked for the solution and was met with a deafening silence. "Wow" he said, "supposedly the brightest of the best and you can't even solve this". He then swapped out the slide for one showing graph paper with the x and y lines added. He reached into his pocket, took out a small tin, opened it and, using some tweezers carefully took out a maggot and placed it on the graph (on the overhead screen the maggot appeared about 3" long!). The maggot had obviously been dipped in ink because, as it crawled, he drew a perfect curve which was obviously the solution to the equation! "Call yourselves Mathematicians, a maggot can solve this and yet none of you could"! It turned out the graph was actually 6 acetate sheets that had the solution carefully cut into them and the maggot was simply crawling along the 'trench'! I never forgot that professor or the stuff he taught.
Wow I’m dealing with my daughter also while watching this 😂 She’s 2 and is writing doodles on my notepad.
the love / struggle is real
@@yaymath It really is & well worth it ❤️ #motivation
Watching at 2024 👍👍❤
Omg Thaaaaank you 😮💨😮💨
I'm from Sri Lanka. I'm learning at a university. This video is helped me for my studying.thankyou
Which just goes to show that everything you learn in school is arbitrary. This makes just a little sense as most of the rest we were brainwashed with in school. Great performance though.
😂 really helped,i enjoyed it than any other word problem videos on RUclips
Thank you for your kind feedback, Fauzia!
So cute 1
He's good at explaining this concept. Just made a comparison and he's much better. Take this from a former maths teacher
You're so kind, huge feedback coming from a colleague like you.
And my mom thought that i was actually studying 😂
I am four minutes in and have already paused multiple times just to digest. Thank you so much for this lesson, you are the absolute best teacher!
Hi Jared, yes I'm very proud of this video as being a hugely valuable teaching lesson.
Thank you ❤
You are a great teacher. Greetings from the Netherlands
Welcome to Yay Math, and bedankt for your kindness!
Bro is single-handedly saving my grades
Credit to you, for doing the work!!
Great teacher
I have to re take my algebra state test sometime during this summer because I found out a few weeks ago that I didn't pass and this video is helping me a lot (i was 2 points away from a 3😭) I can still move on to high school but I still want to re take it so it can calm my anxieties about failing I re read my comment and it sounds confusing lol
Not confusing at all! I know that this time, you’ll reach the mountaintop.
bless this man’s soul
That guy was honest. That moment when you finally confess that none of this makes sense. 🤣

He surely does!
Starts with you- thank you.

Is he Armenian?
I completely agree. Eventually the term ends and you have to give a grade. You have to move onto the next set of objectives.
Absolutely. We must draw the line somewhere, and the end of the term is objectively the place to do it. It sounds like her point is that prior to the term ending, if the students are willing to work for it, they can have another chance to demonstrate mastery, and remediate their grades well within the term period. Do you generally jive with that approach?
At my school, we have a growth piece mid quarter to demonstrate skills and a performance task at the end that replaces that grade. Because they get a second chance, some students will not put as much effort into the first one since it "doesn't actually count". Additionally, some have expressed that it's better to do bad in the growth piece because that way they can demonstrate improvement throughout the quarter when they have to talk about their progress in the student led conference at the end of the semester.
Wow! What an awesome Principal and teacher!!! We need every school to operate this way!
You're spot on, Michele. She makes a series of choices that culminate in an inspired learning space.
A teacher like THIS will make an impression on their students and never be forgotten.........
I appreciate your method and passion. I have always had difficulty with word problems and until now I think I know why. For whatever reason I had a compulsion to activate my math brain this morning. The last time I was required to really engage my math brain was in statistics as a requirement for my bachelors degree. After following along with your method I came to the conclusion that in fact I always asked the questions but to far into detail, such as, what other fruits is she selling other than apples and plums. Am I to assume the apples and plums are the only fruits she is selling? Then why use the plural form for fruits just to label them out individually and without stating that she only sells two types of fruits to start with. Which in that case it doesn't matter what types of fruits they are. Is is 50 pieces of fruit or does 50 fruits indicates that it may indicate the there are 50 different types of fruit. If Suzy sells 2 types of fruit and sells a total of 50 pieces of that fruit in a day, how many of each fruit is she selling if she is selling 8 more than the other? I'm 54 now with my 5th child going into equations and I have struggled even with this newer math technique. I really appreciate the channel being up and letting my activate my brain a bit. I'll keep trying.
He had them so confused they couldn’t read the words. Hilarious teacher! 👍
dont care if this vid is 11 years old
This is absolutely brilliant! Well done for all involved, and the ‘victims’ for being good sports
I don't know anything but man what a nice atmosphere in this class. I literally never experience this. It has nice family living room during Xmas vibes. They caught up and expressed how the whole thing didn't make sense *right away*, in any class I attended at any age kids would have said nothing at all (I know, sad.)
Thank you for all of the time and effort you put in to making this!
It's my honor, thank you for your kind feedback.
They literally had this kid so focused on solving it, that he couldn't see what was going on in front of his eyes. 😂 Hahahahaha!
U are absolutely awesome

I love this man… thank you for your help! I went back to school, my math exam is at the end of the month. Thank you for your help. Please, keep being yourself! ❤
I'm preparing to take the ACT test this year, and I have been freaking out over the math section. But this video helped me feel so much more confident! Thank you!
Elliott, that’s so wonderful! Could you circle back and share how the test went after you take it? I’m so happy to know that this video has helped your preparation.
This is why this guy is an amazing teacher. Need more like him
This is awesome
It's a magical interaction with varying levels of understanding.

Wasn't your goal to construct line that will pass through Q an parallel to line that has A in it?
What a great joke, the kids were super, feeding into the teacher's bs. Ive watched this several times just because it's done so well!
12:00 It seems you lost vision of the negative symbol.
The 2010 Videos are always the best for education man!
The fact that its 2024 and this is still helping me
